Actually, to be more specific, the ones in EA are all on rivers and trade routes. They were probably ones that served those that worked on the waterways and tourists were an added bonus. This is not quite the same in the Lakes, where the roads would have been the main trade routes, even though people did ply the meres.

I work on the Thames (undertaking archaeological work on the foreshore at low tide) and I can tell you that the many riverside pubs and hostelries are welcome places to stagger to after several hours delving in the mud!
