The question is not, is a "commemorative plaque" a good idea. The question is, does the item I saw there more than 25 years ago, still exist? And is it the same thing that Dan F. was originally asking about? Surely someone on this list has been to Peel Island since 1977! Even to say something like "I was there in 1988 (or whenever) and saw no such thing" would be of interest.

The item I photographed was so subtle that it may very well not be the "plaque" Dan F. first described, and it was nothing at all like what Dan V. and Peter H. were commenting against. Also, it was so small, it could very easily be overlooked: only an inch or two across, bearing only Ransome's name and dates, inserted into the bark of a tree. For all I know the tree is no longer there, either.
