Thanks for the image of Dot writing 'The Captain and the Midshipman'. I'm not sure she'd really have had a crush on John, but if she did, she'd certainly have written such a book.
Malcolm Saville's Lone Pine series was undoubtedly influenced by AR's books. I discovered it a few years after reading the AR books, but must have thought it not as good, as I never got further than reading two or three of them, and only ever owned one.
