Robert - I agree that Malcolm Saville was not as good a writer as AR, but his ability to express a sense of place was similar - reading both authors writing about some part of England I had not been to was enough to make me want to go there.

Due to the number of works in the Lone Pine series - twenty in total - which he began writing in the 1940s and completed in the 1970s - the books cannot be dated to a time period in the same way as AR's. Until well into the series Saville kept the characters' ages unchanged, before making the decision to allow them to advance just a little, having them leave school and their friendships develop into adult relationships (although still very innocent by modern standards).

If you enjoy reading or re-reading AR as an adult, Saville is worth a go too - if you can find copies. Most of his books are out of print and the rarer ones fetch quite high prices on e-bay. The other annoying fact is that the later editions of his earlier books were abridged. As far as I know the only time AR has suffered that indignity in print is in the paperback of "Swallows & Amazons Forever" where CC & BS are combined into one abridged volume.
