Just heard today’s programme – in search of Swallowdale. There are three more similar this week, at the same time. The formula is that relevant AR excerpts are read out (in RP) and then we hear a group of children excitedly exploring the presumed site. My first reaction is that while there is a spirited atmosphere, the whole thing cries out for vision. When a child says ‘That must be Titty’s flat rock!’, it would be nice to see it. Ditto everything else. Still, better suspend judgment, I suppose, until the end of the week.

[In view of recent Tarboard exchanges, I am sure we are all pathetically grateful to the Beeb for devoting a whole 15 mins to AR. I mean - RP narration, ‘Titty’, French verbs - goodness knows how many non-middle-class people were alienated this afternoon.]
