Peggy's rowing across the lake by herself in Winter did not bother me. But the voyage that did is that very first one. In S&A, the Swallows set out to go to the island for the very first time, loaded with FOUR people, and a load of camping supplies, so much that part of that cargo was to be brought on later by the Jackson's rowboat. A sailboat tilts in the wind, and a boat that is heavy does not have that much freeboard from the water's surface to the edge of the gunwale. It is already low in the water, and a slight tip can start taking water over the side. That situation, coupled with the fact that Roger could not swim, unless he kept one toe on the bottom, just made that trip much to risky. So much so that its hazards were apparent to me at that early age when I first read that story.
