America is still prudish, going by the New Zealand TV commercials which were reputedly not acceptable on American commercial TV:

A previously longrunning advertisement for Anchor Milk which revolved around a teenage girl, her seperated father (who in one episode gets the milk poured over his head), her mother, and her mother’s new friend.

A local advertisement for Novus Windscreen Repair with the line:
“show us your crack”

But it was only recently that the word “bugger” became acceptable in NZ TV adverts, with an ad for Toyota involving rural dwellers, all saying “bugger” after some disaster (so “Bugger” now appears on wheel covers for spare wheels on Toyota 4WD RVs).

Re special symbols in Windows as mentioned recently; they are listed in the back of my MS-DOS 6.2 User’s Guide that came with MS Windows 98 in:

Appendix B: Character Set (Code Page) Table for USA.

Use the right hand numeric keypad (may need NumLock on),
Hold down “Alt” and enter number, eg:

Alt 129 ü
Alt 130 é
Alt 137 ë
Alt 148 ö
Alt 149 ò
Alt 153 Ö
Alt 155 ¢
Alt 156 £
Alt 157 ¥
Alt 171 ½
Alt 172 ¼
Alt 241 ±
Alt 248 °
Alt 252 n
Alt 253 ²
