In the HMSO publication 'The Mediterranean Fleet - Greece to Tripoli', published presumably in 1943 are photographs of scenes on the cruiser HMS Manchester immediately after she was torpedoed. Most but not all of the crew are wearing long trousers, but some are in shorts - in particular one oil soaked Lieutenant Commander in charge of a rescue party is in evidently once immaculate white shorts and an white short sleeved shirt.
The ship was certainly in a war theatre then!
