Very cautiously, may I suggest that the D's were indeed at boarding schools, (the opening of PP seems to require this), but there seems to be complete silence as to where the Swallows lived, other than in "the South", until the opening of WDMTGTS, where we find them staying in a cottage at Pin Mill, on bed and breakfast terms, waiting for their father to rejoin them. Presumably Mrs Walker is house hunting, but the whole thing is (deliberately?) vague.
