Surely the Commander of HMS Ganges would have a house provided? The Captain certainly did, and anyway officer married quarters were normal at military establishments.
Presumably something needed doing to it to prevent them from moving in immediately at the time of SW - which could explain why Mrs Walker needed urgently to go to London with Commander Walker.
