Compasses are affected by the environment around them. Read Ransomes account of having to get there compass corrected in the Baltic story - it is really interesting.

The dowser would not have to have the rod dragged across the skin merely to have an applied bearing stress. That then raises the next question - what is the sensitivity of the human skin to changes in bearing pressure?

I am not looking at this problem as one where I believe or do not believe - that is irrelevant I merely am interested in the theory.
