It is my impression that when using the two L-shaped metal rods, the common practice was to insert the vertical part of each rod into a metal (I think) tube, one of which was grasped in each hand with the two rods sticking out straight in front of one, but free to swing. This would presumably rule out friction of the hand (but not of the top of the tube against the horizontal part of the rod). At least that was how I saw it done at the 1994 AGM in Ambleside.
