I agree with Jonathan - I have always used 'bale' as a bale of hay, thus as a measure, and 'bail' as to exit - whether from a plane or emptying water manually from anything from a washing machine to a boat.
That said, in essence language use is what you make of it. If you use it differently, celebrate your diversity!
