Bless you, Ed, but the last time I climbed the Old Man there was a gang of children at the summit chucking coke cans at each other and anyone else within range. Their noise was deafening. So much for any Ransome reverie - I got the hell out of it. (By the way, I walked up to the top unencumbered by map, compass, 'whistle' or other contrivance - the path is unmissable except in snow)
