What puzzles me about the topic of this thread is: How did anyone find out? I've eaten Marmite all my life, and never once have I thought to beat it persistently with knife or spoon. Are there people (other than toddlers, who presumably are not being given Marmite) who go around beating their food for long periods to find out if it changes colour? I have not tested this claim myself yet, as I would want to make sure everyone else was out of the house first, in case anyone caught me at it.

Incidentally, the vote in my family is 4-2 in favour of Marmite; not 3-3 as I reported. Only my wife (who is Portuguese, and likes un-British stuff like garlic) and youngest daughter are against.
