Could you elaborate on your question about Swallow's transom? What information are you looking for? Do you mean if they would have made it out of a single piece of wood or a few pieces dowelled together? Most likely the latter, I would think, but it would depend on the availability of wide, stable stock. Are you looking for more detailed information about bevels, knees, etc.?

PS. We have a dingy with the rod arrangement and I find it rather handy and a bit less awkward than the double-pintle arrangement. Perhaps ours is a different set-up from yours, Laurence. Interesting to have a pintle and a gudgeon on the rudder, though. I am not familiar with that approach. I’d say AR’s approach is more common here in the US (at least here in New England).
