All this made me hare off to find my edition of Winter Holiday (Cape edition 1933)and sure enough there it was on page 274. The confusion perhaps rose because it is two pages over from where Captain Flint is reporting his first meeting with Nancy from the end of the lawn.
What does interest me is the single flag waving episode, as I remember Dick and Dorothea encountering it when they first saw the Swallows & Amazons on Wildcat.
