Let me add to the confusion. I have the Lippincott (USA) edition (c. 1934) and p. 274 is the last page of Chapter 23, "The Uses of an Uncle." However, the discussion..."Nancy and Captain Flint consulted...noiselessly, by semaphoring or by talking deaf and dumb language with their fingers" in on p. 268.

I must confess, in all the times I've read WH, I'd completely missed the "deaf and dumb language" bit.
