There is nothing to say Cpt flint and Nancy were using an official deaf/dumb sign language, they might have just been busking one as people do if they are trying to comunicate through a window or in a noisy environment. There are references to single flags being waved in a morse fashion to send messages. When the gaels catch the red herrings in GN I remeber Peggy sending a cqd distress messsage this way. (pedants head for your copies, but I think I'm nearly right!) The signal units of both armies in the american civil war used this method of transmitting information, using long sweeps to left and right, then returning to vertical between letters. At night flaming torches were employed, which must have been exciting.
