The man you mention might be Stuart Weir, whose lovely essay on 'The boats of the Swallows and Amazons' can be reached via the Arthue Ransome Website, 'Dick's Pocket Book' or, hopefully, via the link below.
I wish there were some teaching notes or a study guide - particularly in conjunction with We Didn't Mean to Go to Sea
