Very many thanks.

I couldn't believe that the fishermen, many of whom were Bible-thumpers could have got ir wrong!

Even the less pious skippers would order the crew to shoot the nets with the command "Heave nets in the name of the Lord" or more prosaically "Over for the Lord"

The best catch ever recorded by a herring drifter was 315 cran by the 'Lord Hood' (LT 20) in 1952. The cran was a measure of volume, nominally 1320 fish, so that this single catch was about 415,800 herring. In those days the North Sea was evidently rather more productive than Galilee had been in the year 32 AD.

The best year was 1913 with approximately 2,000,000,000 herring landed in Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft.
