Apart from the dates in the cairn on Kanchenjunga in SD it's hard to tie down a year for the books- although in WDMTGTS when they return on their 'Happier Voyage' the mention of "The tall wireless masts at Bawdsey" (p. 314, JC 1947) means that it had to be after March 1936.

As SD is dated Aug 11 1931 (p.339 JC 1947), this might make for some awkward numbers- if John was 11 in SD, he'd be 16 in WDMTGTS. Which shows the problems in trying to be too pedantic in these matters.

Last night, on the UKHistory channel. there was a 'History of Radar' which was quite old, a fair 'I was there' piece, although desperately unhistorical. However there were some nice old newsreel pictures of Bawdsey Manor in which you could see the radio masts. There are also pictures on the Web which show what they would have seen from a distance, as they sailed towards Harwich.
