I read somewhere that The Picts and The Martyrs was thought to be special but by whom I am not sure. I think it was in Brogan's biography of AR.
Knight seemed to have quite an influence, I have Racundra and Falcon in The Baltic in mind. Also Knight on Sailing was Dick's guide to sailing.
Riddle of the Sands is one of my favourite books but then I have always enjoyed sailing on the Broads which is another kind of ditch crawling!
