The Drabble discussion list (very tiny) has recently had a long thread about how (allegedly) Drabble scrupulously avoids certain aspects of English life, and concentrates on white middle-class, professional family background, etc etc. Hmmm.

Not a million miles from the discussion that surfaces here from time to time about the appeal of Ransome's writing then?

Drabble seems to have discovered a profitable line and sticks to what she knows. Not really culpable, it seems to me. Mind you, I find her books rather too tedious to read, so I speak from the standpoint of having started a few times, but never having got to page 100. That doesn't mean that her opinions on AR aren't worth reading.
