I totally agree with Phil.

Staying in London City is horribly expensive. I've only done so once and the cheap hotel was awful. The only way my husband can afford it is to do so on business and thus his company foot the bill.

Your best bit, in my own opinion, is to hire a car and drive out of London as quickly as you can. Yes this is expensive (as others have already mentioned) but the flexiblity compared to public transport can not be over emphasised.

As for accomodation Phil's list was great as far as chains go, but if you want some real English culture you ought to risk a few of our Guest Houses or B&Bs (Bed and Breakfast). Just do a google of Guest House with the area you want. All decent ones will have a star rating (1 star low to 5 stars high) or some other officially recognised rating system from a tourist board.

The best accomodation I've ever experienced was in a 3 star Guest House in Fort William. Not part of a chain. No gimmicks. Just clean, comfortable and friendly - nothing to compare to it!

I hope this little information is helpful, John.

Dusty.
