1) We are, as it happens, booked later this month into a double room at the Hanover Hotel near Victoria for £45 for a night. This doesn't seem an unreasonable price and the pictures of the hotel on the net look quite acceptable.

2) I'm not sure that the ideal introduction to travel in England is driving through London, then up the M1 and the M6 to the Lakes. It will take at least 6 hours if traffic conditions are perfect all the way, which they are unlikely to be, and the motorways don't show he best of Britain anyway. Since your time is limited I personally would go by train, booking in advance to get cheap(er) tickets, and get a hire car somewhere in the north, perhaps Lancaster.

3) I question the advice about hub caps. I have never lost one - even in the Lakes. I got back from there this evening with my hub caps still intact.
