"You can also just have too many characters. It's a wonder AR manages so comfortably with his vast cast; but when he was wanting to add reasonably fully constructed new characters you don't really want to be juggling 9 principles"

As a writer, currently at work on a series with a "cast of thousands", this definitely rings true to me. AR was a masterful writer, but you can only have so many characters before they start tripping over each other and getting blurred in the eyes of the reader. With all the tycoons, ama, counselor, various guards, "Our Captain", and piratical "extras", would an additional two characters, even well known, have been just too much?

And out of curiosity, are the Ds ever mentioned in any of the "real" books where they don't appear in person? I remember the Swallows sending postcards to the Amazons in WDMTGTS, and wondering what the Amazons are up to in SW, but are the Ds ever remembered like this?

Alex
