Getting rid of an accent (or rather, substituting one accent for another) is one thing. Learning to distinguish between two sounds which were treated as equivalent in the language(s) you learned when very young is quite another, and some people never manage it. There seems to be a certain range of ages when your brain learns where to draw boundaries beteween different sounds.
