That seems right; having spent much of my life in the East I am married to one Asian and count several more amongst my best friends. As you say, there are some pronunciations in English that they really find it hard to distinguish, and I know that my Chinese suffers similarly (there are, notoriously, some words that the lao wei should never attempt to pronounce, because he/she will probably utter an obscenity by mistake!)

After all, Ransome actually knew Soong ChingLing, on whom the character of Missee Lee is largely based; she had indeed spent several years at a Western boarding school in Shanghai and went to University in the USA (Macon college, Georgia). It would seem likely that he modelled her pronunciation.
