Rail fares are horrendously expensive in Britain, and if two or more people are travelling together, the car wins hands down.
It's more complicated than that. Standard fares are very expensive but you rarely have to pay them if you tackle it in advance. There are lots of fare deals available, but you have to negotiate them by phone or via a travel agent or by booking ahead on the internet. My wife organises art trips for small groups and you can get perfectly reasonable rates this way.
The train journey to Kendal or Carlisle, say, is very pretty and relaxing. If you think you will enjoy the trip more if you take the train and then hire a car locally, although it will probably cost a bit more it won't be so bad and would be well worth it.
