It`s quite a long time since I stayed in London, but when I did, I stayed at the `Y` Hotel, part of the YMCA at the bottom end of Tottenham Court Road. You don`t need to be a member. The rooms are smallish, with fairly basic tubular steel furniture, but all have shower/WC and were, and I suppose still sre, very reasonable cost.
But why fly into London? Manchester airport is an international one with flights to and from places all over the world, and is a good 3 or 4 hours car drive nearer the Lake District than London.
As for the merits of car hire v. public transport, it depends how many people are travelling. Rail fares are horrendously expensive in Britain, and if two or more people are travelling together, the car wins hands down.
