I don't know where you're travelling from, Jim, but when I worked in a British Rail ticket office about 10 years ago, visitors from outside the UK could buy a "BritRail" pass in the US before they flew over. If I remember correctly, it would offer a number of days travel within a set period (say, ten days travel in a month) and was very reasonably priced but you would have to buy it before you got to the UK.
