On our second last field trip to the Lake District, we did visit Peel Island which is smaller than Wild Cat seems to be. Peel Island is quite densely wooded with a good deal of underbrush, but the tees are not very high as the soil is thin.

If you look at the picture of the camp and landing place in the second chapter of Swallowdale that will give you some idea of the size of the trees by comparing them with the tents, though Ransome's perspective isn't always very sure. In that picture the Swallow looks like a huge galleon compared to the people on shore.
