We just got a fine for conjestion charge in London. For our travel in a hire car in London on May 17th.

London has an inner zone for which, if you drive into it between 0700 and 1830, Monday to Friday, you have to pay a five pound charge, which covers you for the whole day.

Every approach is very clearly marked, and there are large 'C' signs painted on the road at every entry point, but if you are very preoccupied with other things I guess it is possible to miss them...

Bad luck on being caught- but it's a truly splendid scheme. As a Londoner, I find it's recaptured the centre for pedestrians and public transport; buses are now excellent, because they are no longer locked in by zillions of cars. The centre had become indescribably noisy and polluted; it's now become a pleasure to go into town again.

The only drawback is that as the cost of living in Britain spirals upwards, the £5 charge is now too low. I think they'll have to double it some time soon.

People who live inside the zone pay 10% of the charge if they cross the boundary.

Ken Livingstone deserves huge credit for introducing it, and for greatly improving the bus services at the same time. I'm certainly voting for him today (our local election day). He's made our lives measurably better- more than anybody else has managed to do.
