In PP, someone thinks to themselves, while worried that someone else (almost sure it's Susan worrying about Roger) is going to get caught, that this sort of thing (indianing around, stalking the unfortunate Squashy Hat) is all very well, but Mother would be horrified if she ever thought they'd been rude to a native. Sorry, no idea of a page reference...

My feeling has always been that there are two codes - you're polite to the natives while picking up milk, making sure they don't realise you're stalking them (perhaps some of the care they take is due to the fact that the older ones at least realise it would be inappropriate to be caught?), but when you're with the other children, your own parents to a certain extent and certainly with CF, the other code applies.
