London Airports (Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted) all have train connections to the North-West of England. From Heathrow you either have to go to central London (Euston station) or take an airport bus to Watford Junction, first stop out from Euston. Trains are at least hourly during the day. Gatwick and Stansted both have their own railway stations, though the long-distance trains are infrequent.
Whichever airport you start at, you would almost certainly have to change for Windermere at Oxenholme, but you'd want to do that in any case, since it's Strickland Junction.
If you started at Manchester Airport, there are regular direct trains from there to Windermere.
Once you have got to Windermere, some parts of the Lakes are well-served by buses, but for other places you will be wanting to visit, you would need advice from someone with local knowledge. It would be a good idea to book Bank Ground well ahead, since it's well-known and popular, and Lucy Batty would also be a prime source of local advice.
