Yes, exactly! I think that a lot of the blame can be laid on TV as well- it's such a passive medium.

I was involved in a discussion at a scienc fiction convention about why some people find SF unreadable. (Probably those same people who say 'how can you read those children's books?') One of the real issues seemed to be that SF readers enjoy the idea of things/people/ideas/worlds being different. Some people just can't deal with that idea.
