I know little about copyright but have been doing some looking around on the UK Legislation website. The main current law on copyright appears to be the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988, but when that act was passed the period was still 50 years from the end of the year of the author's death. It seems to have been changed from 50 to 70 years by a statutory instrument, The Duration of Copyright and Rights in Performances Regulations 1995, which came into effect on 1 January 1996.
