Great Northern? As Peter Dowden (see above if you don't know him) used to say on TarBoard's precursor, It's one of my twelve (and a half) favourites. However, even though I have a cottage on a small lake where a pair of Great Northerns (common loons) attempt to nest each year and am somewhat involved in attempting to foil racoon predation of their nests, I think it is my least favourite. Maybe it's because of the ending, I never thought of that. My feeling was that Arthur Ransome did not have as intimate a knowledge of the Scottish natives. They are more than just skaters who can be relegated to the status of seals but to me they don't seem as real as the minor characters in his other books. On the other hand I quite like the books with an East Coast setting and reread them as often as I do the lakes ones.
