The best effort I ever saw (which was years ago now) was a Thames / BBC (?) mini-series of John Macnab. I thought at the time that they really did it very well. But some time later when I tried to buy a set on tape I could find no trace of it anywhere -- most disappointing.

It always surprises me that more of Buchan's books haven't been filmed -- think what could be done with Prester John or The Courts of the Morning, for instance.

Changing the author, though not the subject, I watched Innes' Campbell's Kingdom the other night on video. Although I know the story well, I last saw the film when it was first released in 1957, and I had little memory of it. (I was taken as a 12yo by my elder sister -- I think it was my first-ever visit to a picture-theatre.) But I was struck the other day by how closely the film followed the original story. Yes, there were abridgments and some minor changes, but what was there was all correct, and the story was carried through properly and faithfully to its conclusion. How refreshing!
