Peter:

Pretentious sailing is doing it with high style but no real skills or even a desire to learn the skills. The D's learned to sail and we can see the steps and the whole way they are desparately trying to match up to the skills of the S and A's and the folk on the Norfolk Broad, they are unpretentious. Dicks skill in talking to Mr Dixon is unpretentious. I can tell you that being outside in a 60 knot blow soon shows you a pretentious sailor as one who huddles below as the wrold goes to hell - he wonders if you will survive - on deck we are to busy wet and cold to care.

My father I always thought of as a pretentious old sailor. he could sail but I never knew why he did except to drink beer with his mates.

Next time I come to England I will meet you at Coniston and show you how to sail properly. I am sure we will be able to borrow a boat. You will come back wet cold miserable to the bone and really happy with yourself.

It is a state of mind, nothing else. A bit of courage helps.

John
