Sound like a good excuse for yet another nautical pub crawl over the Thurne next year! How excellent. From memory of the story, The Roaring Donkey should be up Martham Dyke, but isnt! There are a couple of pubs on The Yare that would fit the description, ie up a Dyke off the main river.
The allusion to badly painted pub signs may come from my comment that a Red Lion in Cheshire had a sign that looked more like a Romping Kitten and the pub is now known as The Romper.
Perhaps I should make it my duty to sail to all the pubs on the Thurne and offer my best nomination for a Roaring Donkey.
