I regret that I cannot recall who it was who proffered, in the course of that enquiry, what I think must be the most plasuble explanation - that there was, on or near to the Broads, somewhere beyond Potter Heigham, I think, a pub named the "The White Lion", which, in consequence of a badly painted inn sign, was nicknamed "The Roaring Donkey".
