It may well be possible to balance the rig of your dinghy, Alasdair, especially by paying close attention to sail trim. Bear in mind that in a small boat such as yours, shifting your weight forward and aft changes the center of resistance (or whatever it's called) of the hull. Indeed, I used to sail my 14' peapod without a rudder, stearing by shifting my weight. Move your weight forward to head up wind, aft to go off the wind. You might be able to use that to your advantage to find a balanced point of sail as you head over to the Isle of Man.
