I stand entirely corrected.

Thanks to good old ABE Books I have re-equipped myself with 'The Art of Coarse Cruising'

Page 14 - "A deep love of the soil is part of Coarse Cruising. One might say that if sailing is mucking about in boats, Coarse cruising is boating around in muck..."

So did Michael Green learn it at the Horning Sailing Club or teach it to them?
