Though I was born after the war, a fair number of wartime books, claiming to comply with the war economy standards, were around when I was young. I even seem to remember guessing as a child that the different look of PM was because it was first published during the war.

If a pre-war book was being reprinted during the war, then obviously they would use cheaper paper, but if the original pre-war type was still available, would the book be reset purely to satisfy the economy standards? Or did the layout aspects of the standards only apply to new books? Or was it up to the printer to balance the price and availability of paper against the cost of resetting?

Does anyone have more recent reprints of PM in hardback than my 1951 edition? Did the wartime layout continue for many years because they were re-using type already set?
