Good point, Jon -- our surface mud seems to contain very little sand except at the margins, and I was taking its similarity to Essex mud rather for granted.

I've just been rereading Christina Hardyment, where she mentions hinged splatchers. An "older and wiser Mastodon" had designed them, explaining that "he had thought putting hinges on might help break the suction created by the mud underneath them." No other details, unfortunately.
