I have been a bit mystified about this stuff about roving (I thought that was the name for scouting for teenagers - don't worry, just a Baden Powell reference) and clenching (something done with teeth). But all is revealed on the Wooden Boatshop website - it is just finishing the pointy end of a copper nail so that it doesn't pull out.
