The US version of Harry Potter went even further than Dave mentions. Simple changes like the Weasleys' "Mum" becoming "Mom" are understandable, but there's a very strange change to the end of the queue for the Sorting Hat.
After Harry has been assigned to Gryffindor, The Philospher's Stone continues:
"And now there were only three people left to be sorted. 'Turpin, Lisa,' became a Ravenclaw and then it was Ron's turn ...... a second later the hat had shouted 'GRYFFINDOR!' ....... 'Zabini, Blaise,' was made a Slytherin."
Compare this with The Sorcerer's Stone:
"And now there were only three people left to be sorted.'Thomas, Dean,' a Black boy even taller than Ron, joined Harry at the Gryffindor table. 'Turpin, Lisa,' became a Ravenclaw and then it was Ron's turn ...... a second later the hat had shouted 'GRYFFINDOR!' ....... 'Zabini, Blaise,' was made a Slytherin."
Only three people left? There was a discussion recently on the Tarboard about Political Correctness. This seems to me an unmistakable example.
