This small mystery, which was probably of no interest to anyone but me, is now solved, after a bit of web searching.

The first TV series, Para Handy - Master Mariner, shown in 1959-60, was followed by a further single show in 1965, which led to two series in 1966 and 1967. These shows of 1965-7, involving many of the same cast and crew as in 1959-60, are the ones I remembered, and were my introduction to the characters. There were revivals in 1973-4. Everything from 1965 to 1974 was shown under the title The Vital Spark (the name of Para Handy's decrepit puffer).

What PhilW and I called the second series was actually at least the fourth, depending on how you count. It went out in 1994 and 1995 under the title Tales of Para Handy.

The single show of 1965 was part of the series Comedy Playhouse, a series of one-off comedies by different writers featuring different characters. Several shows led to long-running series, of which the most famous example was The Offer, which became Steptoe and Son.
